JOB TITLE: Director of Milk Transportation

LOCATION: Baraboo, Wisconsin

REPORTS TO: Senior Vice President of Operations and Supply Chain

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for establishing a cohesive logistics function that manages farm milk hauling, inbound freight, intercompany freight, and outbound transportation across all company facilities and all modes (milk, other liquid, dry van/reefer). This position solely responsible for owning the relationships with all service providers (carriers, 3PL, TMS, etc.) within the Foremost Farms network. This will include managing all related logistics activities, which vary from activities that are strategic and policy-defining, to activities that may be day-to-day and tactical, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Developing a corporate strategy for managing all logistics and transportation needs, with the input of key stakeholders, including developing an understanding all customer requirements, and conducting a thorough evaluation of transportation transaction data,
Developing and regularly reporting KPIs/metrics to detail logistics costs and track service performance.
Developing a logistics network with optimized routing/scheduling processes that are scalable and flexible to support changing business priorities.
Evaluating the current TMS/3PL partnerships from a cost and quality-of-service perspective, developing a vision for the “future state,” and executing the necessary actions to achieve.
Establishing an ideal organization structure for appropriately managing the company’s logistics needs from both a tactical and a strategic perspective.
Managing Transportation Service Providers, sourcing and managing all 3PL/TMS providers as it relates to transportation, the underlying carriers, and any other third-party logistics companies (brokers, warehouses, etc.) to provide the highest level of service at the most cost-effective rates.
Monitoring the freight market regularly for opportunities and risks in terms of both service and cost; reporting trends and providing visibility to the rest of the organization. Staying up to date on all regulatory changes that impact the freight market.
Evaluating the current carrier network and identifying opportunities for cost reductions through Freight Procurement (Freight RFP) and Network Optimization initiatives.
Managing the day-to-day service execution and the periodic (monthly, quarterly, annual) performance reviews with all key logistics partners.
Managing the carrier claims and invoice auditing processes to ensure all actions are completed in a timely and satisfactory manner.
Providing freight quotes to Sales/Customer Service to support business opportunities, as necessary.
Leading, coaching and directing centralized Transportation Planners/Schedulers; may be required to lead plant-based logistics staff either as direct reports or through “dotted-line” reporting relationships.
Regular and punctual attendance and physical presence in the workplace.
Timely and accurate completion of duties.
Occasional travel for work, up to 33% of the time.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

The following are required competencies of the position that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

Computer Skills: Must have strong Excel skills. Ability to build data models from disparate sources. Ability to operate all information technology related business systems, programs and applications in a manner that achieves efficiency, accuracy, and relevancy of information processing and reporting as it applies to this position.
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as dictated letters or memoranda, invoices, company policies and various documentation, paying close attention to grammar. Ability to process routine reports and correspondences. Ability to communicate effectively with employees and applicants of the organization. Ability to effectively present information to other employees of the organization. Requires excellent telephone skills.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to correctly add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to correctly compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills & Abilities: Must have creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as a computer and keyboard, calculator, FAX, photocopier, telephone, postage machine, paper shredder, scanner, etc. The ability to drive a motor vehicle and maintaining a valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands – Employee is frequently (more than 75% of time) required to: use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls, sit; to verbally communicate; and to hear. The employee is occasionally (up to 33% of the time) required to walk and stand. The employee must occasionally (up to 33% of the time) lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment – Employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne participles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Protective Equipment – No protective equipment is generally required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain, business, finance/accounting, or related field and ten or more years of job-related experience.

Preferred experience / qualifications:
implementing / managing core carrier programs, TMS, private fleet, third-party logistics provider partnerships, and optimizing complex logistics network, delivering cost savings and improving efficiencies.
extensive knowledge of shipping markets across a variety of modes and dairy-related
developing and executing freight RFPs with a track record for cost savings
strong communication skills, ability to influence, demonstrate sound business judgement

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
